OwO Survival Handbook
The OwO Survival Handbook
What is an “OwO”?
The OwO is a universal symbol that can display various emotions or activities depending on how it’s written. Throughout this handbook, you will see many of these variants. The most well known is, of course, “OwO”. Another popular one is “UwU”.
But what does it mean? Who uses it?
A common OwO is usually associated with anime, cuteness, or irony, though can vary depending on the usage and appearance. The emoticon genre is commonly used by anime fans, furries, K-Pop fans or anyone else who wants to tag along. The audience is hastily shrinking, though.
Eyes are the most important part for your OwO. It certainly shows the most emotion. Many different characters can substitute as eyeballs. The most common are O and U, but others do work, such as Q, V, 0 (zero), @, X, and any other circular letter or symbol, even a period!
Accents are used to add eyebrows to eyes. Below is an example.
O → Ò
OwO → ÒwÓ
Some other accents include: Ô Ö Ò Ó Ø Ō Õ
This is where your creativity shines! Try making your own face with accents. On most phones and some computers, you can hold down certain letters to display their accented versions. Another useful letter to put accents on is U. “UwU” shows a calmer expression.
Below are some examples to get your creativity flowing.
ÒwÓ ÓwÒ ÔwÔ ŌwŌ
ØwØ Ôwõ ôwô òwó ōwō
ÙwÚ ÛwÛ ùwú ŪwŪ Ôwū
The mouth is the second most important part of your OwO. It clarifies whether you are showing happiness, sadness, etc. Many mouths can be used. Though not used nearly as frequently as W, these may also pop up from time to time: n, o, m, 3 or v.
OwO is very universal because of its simplistic nature. Most languages - even ancient ones - have circle-shaped, W-shaped, or U-shaped characters.
Below is a table of languages and their characters useful for OwO-making. Of course, we advise you to be creative and not just stick to these. Experiment a little!

In Polish, the word “owo” quite literally means “the word”. This may cause some confusion if your OwO is typed with lowercase O’s. Also, fun fact, “owo” can mean “arm” in Ogea - an endangered language only spoken by around 2,210 people in New Guinea. OwO could be confused as a plural noun too, with an area in Nigeria being named “Owo”.
Above is a chart via Google Trends that shows the web search usage of “OwO”, blue, and “UwU”, red. As you can see, OwO usage - at least in the way we are talking about - spikes starting at August 2016. In 2018, the use of OwO and UwU blew up in the K-Pop community, as shown in the chart. A chapter talking about the K-Pop community’s usage also exists.
People all around the K-Pop community use UwU as a noun, mostly with the phrase, “big uwu” or “big uwu energy”, usually meaning “a lot of love”. K-Pop stans are one of the biggest users of OwO, UwU, etc..
Depending on your way of speaking, you may pronounce OwO and UwU in a few different ways, but below are the most common ones. You might even spell out the letters themselves.
OwO - “oh woah”
UwU - “oo woo”
VwV - “voo woo” (rare)
Most variants not on this list are simply pronounced as the comprising letters.
Sometimes, because of the large amount of emoji (i.e. 👱😍😹), circular or eye-shaped symbols are used in replacement of the “O” in “OwO”. Below are some examples.

If you’re reading this book, you probably found it from Twitter. If so, you may be wondering what a “Spirit OwO” is, as it’s referenced a lot.
A Spirit OwO is a spirit animal of sorts, except it’s a face. Not just any face, though! A face that represents you as a person, what you mean. Pick or make yours, and be sure to be expressive and creative. We have a variety up for display on Twitter and more are posted each day.
Here are some encrypted versions of OwO that may come in handy someday. You could be trapped and need to send a message in another language that you don’t really understand, like a computer language or encryption. Luckily, if you have this book available, you can! Well, at least you can send “OwO”...
To write “OwO” in other human languages, see Chapter 3 - Versatility.

Programs and websites that don’t support HTML will only show a plain OwO, but ones that do support HTML will show exactly or something similar to what you see. Apps like Apple Notes or Google Docs, for example, will work, but won’t on things like Twitter or Instagram won’t.

If you’ve ever used emoji on Discord, chances are you know they aren’t exactly the norm. They are used by typing the name of the emoji surrounded by colons ( : ). For example, typing :monkey: will result in a monkey emoji. 🐒
Sure, you can put any normal emoji into Discord chats, but we like to document everything! :)
